Tour de Glastonbury

I don't have the route map (no GPS), but I do know that myself, Jay and Pete rode from Pete's mom's house on Hebron Ave up into the hills of Glastonbury and came zooming back down, multiple times, accruing a total of just over 31 miles.

When I first rolled up, I felt a little intimidated by what I saw. Jay and Pete were giving their bikes a final once-over, and then went inside to change. They came out in the full spandex - jerseys and padded shorts. Their bikes were sights to behold; Jay with a full carbon Jaymis that won 2009 Bike of the Year, and Pete with a full aero frame Cervelo.

Pete was razzing on Jay about his recent crash, and Pete apparently had crashed the previous time or shortly there before, so I had a few jitters, especially regarding descents.

Feeling a bit anxious, I followed Pete out onto the road to begin our ride.

We went uphill on Hebron Ave first off, and I was sucking Pete's wheel. The plan was to tuck behind him or Jay until I could gauge if I was going to last the whole ride. I was encouraged at how I was climbing - I could manage in my large chainring when the two of them were in their smaller rings for most of the first climb. Due to injuries, Pete starts his climbs slow, and he pulled off to tend to his legs while bidding me to keep going. I reach the crest and stopped, not knowing where our route would take us next.

I had stopped in the right place, our next right being a descent on the route. Pete gave me some tips on how to descend safely, which did help, but I remained timid on this first one. Pete attacked the descent like a mad man, sprinting into it. His confidence eventually rubbed off, and halfway down the hill I felt like I could handle more speed around the bends.

We continued our climbs and descents, which I handled fine up until Crystal Ridge. That's one steep hill. I think Pete said it was a 10% grade. I pushed ahead but used up a lot of energy, so when I did indeed have to drop down to the small chainring I wasn't moving very fast. I stopped to wait when I reached a false crest, and when Pete and Jay reached me they were looking better for wear than I was. Still, I hung in there and was rewarded with another fun descent. Keeping my ass back on the saddle helped, same with being in the drops and keeping my arms bent.

We soon came across the Connecticut River along the Portland border near Route 17, which we ended up taking into town. We stopped at a gas station for some quick feeding, and then wrapped up our ride with a series of short but good climbs.

Apart from my helmet's plastic retaining clips seemingly failing in their retaining job, the ride was much more enjoyable than I had anticipated. My legs weren't sore after the ride, nor the day after, and I feel like I could've ridden 10 more miles perhaps. Hopefully we make this a regular thing.

Uneven Seating

Ended up just being me heading out to Cromwell for Blow Hole State Park instead of a group ride at Penwood. Blow Hole State Park is pretty cool, but a real short ride. There aren't a lot of trail obstacles, and the downhill sections are fast but not steep, except for a few places at the edge of the ridge. The trail is pretty hairy near the edge of the ridge, as some trees on the border of the trail threaten to knock you off down the hill if you aren't careful.

On the downside though, the trails aren't marked at all, making it difficult to translate the map at the parking lot to a mental image. I ended up on some alternative trail entrances from residential areas that I rather would've avoided - though one of them provided some fast downhill thrills on the way back to the main trail. Also, the Park is buggy. Extremely buggy. I ignored the warnings from MTBR / NEMBA and I'm wishing I'd brought spray.

My ride was cut short when the saddle came loose, much like the time at the Reservoir. This time, however, I forgot to bring my multi-tool. I assumed I would not need it and so left it in the bag of my road bike. Learned a lesson there.

Two other bikers told me about two other State Parks on Route 99 in Rocky Hill, near the ferry, which I'll check out when I have a chance. With the saddle issue and the heat, I wasn't in the mood to keep riding.

Heading to Blow Hole State Park (River Highlands (Cromwell Creek)) after work today. Supposedly an easy, dry, flat ride, but I'm scouting it for later opportunities to introduce trail riding to beginners. That and it's still pretty hot out.

Hot Times in the Old Town

Wanting to fit in some exercise even on the scorcher that was Sunday the 4th, but not having the desire to get drenched up at the Reservoir or Penwood, I took the Haro downtown with the goal of riding on the Riverfront trail.

Traffic was sparse, it being the holiday and all, with the exception of Market Street as Cirque du Soleil's tent was right in the parking lot of the pedestrian overpass to the park. After a joke with a parking attendant about a bike discount, I crossed over I-91.

The park trail was surprisingly dry, although I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, given that the last rain was a week ago and the soil there is very fine and silty. Ten minutes into the trail, I took a tumble when I failed to identify a thick pit of sand. Too much weight on the front wheel plus a turn while pedaling caused the front wheel to slip and over-rotate, dumping me into the sand in the process. Since it was sand, I didn't suffer any damage, but gained a healthy respect for the conditions. The rest of the ride was pretty tame, with the only obstacle being a friendly pit bull.

I wasn't quite ready to head home after the trail, so I tooled around the park a bit and then headed up to Adriaen's Landing. After a short detour to the East Hartford side, I decided to take advantage of the low traffic and did some exploring downtown, checking out the new (but incomplete) walkway around the Science Center that will eventually lead up to the Convention Center as well. I usually dip over to the Hartford Club pedestrian ramp to access the streets, but that was closed off for construction. I rode over to the Front Street retail development across from the Convention Center, and then through Bushnell Park. I heard the tinny echoes of a bullhorn up by the Capitol Building and, sure enough, a bike cop confirmed my suspicions - a Tea Party Rally. I was pleased to see he was as annoyed as I was, and thankfully their turnout wasn't anything to write home about.

The ride around downtown also afforded me the opportunity to run some errands. I could really get used to the whole bike lifestyle, I tells ya.

Fortune Favors the Bald... I Mean Bold

After being a friggin' pansy for a whole month, I took to the outer ridge trail at the Reservoir on the Haro. The previous outings, I had passed up that difficult (to me, at least) route in favor of some tame fire roads; still a good workout, but lacking in the technicality and satisfaction areas. What kept me from the outer ridge? It wasn't abject fear, though some steep, rocky descents and ledge drops perturbed me, and it wasn't time constraints, as the Reservoir is not far from my apartment and the summer months mean long, lit evenings... rather, my lack of familiarity with the route and the fatigue of a cold conspired to sap my will.

Yesterday, though, my determination was rewarded. After making it up to the ridge, I met a rider named Jim, who offered to show me more of the route. Since I had only done it once, I graciously accepted his offer. Jim was an older rider, pushing 50, and had been riding the Reservoir for near 25 years. He didn't take the same exact route my other "guide" had, the differences being that all we didn't hit all the swooping downhill stuff, and we entered the meadow from a different location. Still a very enjoyable ride, and although he had 20 years on me, I was pressed to keep up.

There was a bit of excitement during the last leg of the ride when Jim spotted a large male black bear in the trail up ahead. We lost sight of it and contemplated going back along the trail to pick an alternate route until two other riders showed up who shockingly displayed no reservations about running into a 200lb clawed powerhouse. Our confidence bolstered by numbers and their brashness, we pedaled through noisily with no troubles.

Prior to the ride, I discovered that I had left my beat up old helmet at home. Seizing the opportunity, I stopped by Central Wheel and picked up a new one with a sun visor. I was pleased with how easily the straps adjusted, and with how firmly the thing fit. My old one, well, even with patient strap adjustment and fiddling with the foam inserts, the fit left something to be desired; too often it would jostle during bumpy sections or drift backwards off my forehead.

After this ride, I feel more confident that I can ride the ridge trail alone and find my way through. Most of the tough drops and obstacles have an alternate route around them. I figure I'll give my legs a day to recover and then see about hitting it up tomorrow depending on what else I've got going on.

Difficult Rides Are Real Rides

Two weekends ago, I was at the West Hartford Reservoir and finally got to see the more serious XC trails it has to offer. I tagged along with another rider who graciously waited for me after difficult sections so that I could catch up and catch my breath. Thanks to him, I was out there for 2+ hours and grew as a rider.

Sadly, I didn't ride much in the two weeks after, as it was raining the first week and I came down with some sort of cold or flu the second week. Plus, well, I've been staying up too late and sleeping in too late in the morning to bike to work. Pretty lame excuses, I must say.

I turned things around this past weekend though, going out kayaking followed by an hour on the mountain bike, then attending the Real Artways Real Ride. There were some real decked-out, artsy bikes - if my phone cooperates I'll post some of the pictures I took with my phone's camera.

I Say Never Be Complete...

There's something about bikes - I keep eying future purchases, even though I don't have the wherewithal to make good on them at the moment. I'd like a fixed gear bike for tooling around town, a dedicated winter bike, a touring bike, and a 29er singlespeed MTB.

Four more bikes... yeah, that might be approaching odd territory, but I'm finding myself enjoying my time on two wheels.

Fixies are a bit pricey on craigslist - if I'm going to spend 400-500 bucks, I may as well spend a little bit more on a new one. Yeah, they're a fad, but I'd like the increased workout, and a second road bike to putz around on would be nice. Or, I could get the Cross-Check or a similar bike, convert it to fixed gear, and then swap it back when I want to take a long, loaded trip.

The winter bike could possibly be merged with the 29er singlespeed (or be its own bike, maybe a fixed-gear), something I could use to commute with during the winter months when there's snow or ice on the ground. Ideally I'd have a wheelset with studded tires to swap in for those conditions.

I had been looking at a Salsa Fargo as the solution to my touring / 29er MTB curiosity, especially considering that there are long, flat-ish trails that lead from the Hartford area to Boston. There's even the option of making it a single speed.

Plenty of options, really. I just don't know exactly what I want to do as of now.

The Haro, on the other hand, is complete. I put on the front derailleur, made some adjustments, and it shifts fine. I went out to the reservoir twice this week, and might head there this evening instead of the gym, but that remains to be seen. It's friggin' hot and humid out there today.

Recurring Theme

I haven't been so good regarding the location of my keys this past week. I biked to work today and then went over to my folks' house to pick up some parts (spare tubes, quick-release seatpost clamps, front derailleur for the Haro, water bottle cage bolts). My dad was off at a motorcycle class at the spry old age of 66, so I had to use my keys to get into the house. Welp, I ended up leaving them there, only realizing it after arriving at the apartment and ransacking my backpack for a few minutes.

The approach to the folks' abode is governed by a fairly steep incline, one which I prided myself for being able to assault fairly easily as a child on my 18-speed. Turns out, the granny gear of that old MTB made the difference, as it was a chore on the Road Rig with the compact double crankset. Either that or I need to get my legs into proper shape... I'm guessing it's the latter.

Tomorrow is National Bike To Work Day, so I'll naturally be riding in, and then repeat today's circuit to snatch back my keys.

Rehab

After staying off the bikes during the weekend to RICE my busted finger (mostly Rest, not so much the ICE), I was feeling a bit loagy. I was determined not to get bike-fright, so Monday I biked in. I can feel the progress I've made in the past couple months, and see it in my legs. I could see it more if I shaved 'em, but I'm not exactly counting ounces or trimming seconds off intervals or anything.

On the way home, I almost got ended by a careless driver in Bloomfield. The intersection of Wintonbury Ave and School Street is dangerous, as the main route west from Windsor on Wintonbury makes the tight left-hand turn onto School, but also has the option of keeping speed and going straight onto Wintonbury. It's screaming for a stop sign, at least.

My route home takes me westbound on Wintonbury Ave and onto School Street. I signaled and began turning, then heard a car approaching at way past the speed limit. If I had begun my turn just a split second earlier, he would've clipped my front wheel at the very least, and I might not've been here typing these words, because he zoomed by me continuing onto Wintonbury and cleared me by a matter of millimeters. I'm not one to anger quickly, but episodes like this bring out the full fury and foul language.

Rain today, so no riding. Once I get a touring bike, or some clip-on fenders for the hardtail, I'll start doing some wet-weather commuting. Assuming it's clear tomorrow morning, I'll ride in.

Noob

Welp, I pulled a noob move at the Reservoir yesterday and crashed. Went too fast on a short, steep hill right before an intersection with a fire road, hit the brakes and slipped on a patch of gravel and tall grass.

I landed on my right hand, shoulder, and knee, with the index and middle fingers curled up on the brake lever taking the brunt of the impact.

Thankfully nothing's broken (or doesn't seem to be anyways), but my swollen up index finger is killin' me.

I'm going to give it a few days of RICE (Rest Ice Compress Elevate), or as much as I can handle.

The handlebars got twisted all around during the crash and some of the brake cable housing jackets got shredded, so I'll need to replace those soon.

Fun is.

That's a Long Ride for Someone With Nothing to Think About

I stopped by a co-worker's house (same one that sold me the road rig and helped assemble the hardtail) Thursday after work and got the hardtail's wheels trued. They actually weren't that bad; turns out the wobble I saw was mostly uninflated tire not seating perfectly. The rear wheel developed a flat, so I need to get around to checking the tire and tube this weekend. I could've gotten a small puncture in the tube while riding around the Riverside Park trails a few days prior.

Someone told me that today is Bike-to-Work Day, but it's actually next Friday. I rode in anyways, as it's been a bit too long. After work, some co-workers and I are going to ride the towpath of the Enfield Falls Canal. We're riding from North to South and back, which is 9 miles, and then I'll be riding back home from there. Should be 27 miles all-told, but as I'm optimistically planning to hit up Rentschler Field and scout the ride to the stadium before the upcoming USA Soccer vs Czech Republic match, it'll be near 34+ miles. Should the box office be open, I'll also pick up tickets.

Bristol Blows

To be fair, it was the wind that was blowing during the ride out there, a strong, constant headwind with gusts that felt like I ran into a wall of foam. It was slow going, even on the downhill and flat portions, and my legs weren't happy with the extra work so soon after yesterday's ride.

I almost missed the turn onto Main Street in Farmington, as it wasn't marked with anything but a Route 10 sign. I never spent any time in Farmington really, can't stand Murphy & Scarletti's, wasn't a young rich girl so Miss Porter's wasn't a destination, so I never knew Route 10 and Main Street were the same thing. I stopped and got my bearings at a gas station down the road.

Main Street is designated as a scenic route, at least for a mile or so, but apart from signs of money I couldn't really say I saw anything worth looking at. There's no landscape vistas, and all the houses and storefronts look like any other upper-middle class town in New England.

Route 6 wasn't as hellish as I thought it might be. It was hilly and high-traffic, but the shoulder was plenty wide enough for me to not be elbow to door handle with passing cars.

The way back was much easier, what with more descents and less of a wind. I swear the wind changed direction and was blowing against me again, albeit without the intensity of the ride out. I did wobble and almost lose it at 35 mph on Farmington Ave going down the hill from the Reservoir to the start of Boulevard, thanks to a strong gust of a crosswind. That was some scary shit.

If I get up in time, I'm biking to work. Need to get back into the routine.

Riverside Ride Part 2

I got a chance to further explore the trails on the northwest side of Riverside Park along the riverfront downtown. They were muddy, but there's some challenging (at least for me) stuff along the way, like multiple downed logs and brush piles, as well as some real bumpy gravel.

I started off in a reverse of the ride Andrea and I took, using the Hartford Club ramp to get over to Adriaen's Landing.

At first I thought the trails weren't as long as the posted signs said, but I spent about an hour on them. I also took a detour to explore the double track on the levee-top - there's a gravel ramp (bumpy climb, fun descent) up from the trail loop by the rail bridge. There's a down ramp into the North End/North Meadows, near some weird junkyard, a pond, and the CT Transit HQ. The double track extends for some distance, and it's mowed up until around the police firing range. That spooked me a bit (even though the warning lights weren't lit), that and riding behind the dump, so another day I'll follow that further up.

I got the bike real dirty, but I had noticed a homeless dude washing stuff off under a hand-pump along the riverwalk before hitting the trails, so I circled back and washed the bike off as best I could. There's at least three of those pumps, real convenient yet not something I'd expect.

The pedestrian overpass and JoJo's capped off the ride. Nothin' refreshes like a mango green tea smoothie, brain-freeze and all. I got back home around 4, having been out since 1. Not bad at all... but later on I was having thoughts about the Reservoir. Guess I've got a habit forming.

Letting the air out of my tires...

The ride was not to be. I was all set to bike to Bristol when valve head problems prevented me from putting air in the rear tire.

A couple weeks ago, I played the chivalrous one to a friend of mine from middle school after she got a flat prior to happy hour Tuesday night. I gave her my spare tube, and took her busted tube home to patch. Problem was, the Presta valve head got bent, and has a nasty habit of unscrewing itself from the valve housing. That, and it doesn't seem to want to accept any air into the tire. A flat later for me, and I'm without a reliable rear tube and a spare.

I have tubes in my spare wheelset, but I didn't have time to swap 'em out and ended up driving. Fun, fun. Didn't do any riding at all today, so tomorrow has to be better.

Friday Cube Blues

Sitting in the cube is getting torturous, especially since I was a slack-ass and didn't ride into work today.

I'll make up for it, though, with this ride out to Bristol to cat-sit for my sister while she's out of town. I'll take the road rig for sure.

Riverside ride - no, not that Riverside.

I took the new mountain bike out on an easy dirt trail yesterday after work. The wheels need to be trued, so I'm running the disc brakes extra loose until that happens, which means I'm staying away from anything too steep and rocky in the meantime.

I was jonesing for a ride all through the work day, so it was a pleasant surprise when Andrea texted me as I was driving back home asking about going for one.

I took the opportunity to keep it local and explore some of the areas of Hartford that I've been meaning to visit. After cutting through downtown to Market Street, we hit up Riverside park via the pedestrian overpass over I-91. The overpass is in need of some attention, with enough glass shards to adorn half a gothic cathedral.

Turns out there's also 8 miles of dirt trails in the northwest section of the park by the community boathouse, with one spur passing under a railroad bridge. Two diesel locomotives were crossing the river just as we arrived at the bridge, which was cool to see. We turned back at the bridge, so there's much more trail to explore at a later date.

Adriaen's Landing is a bit strange, as the paved park path connects to the city level of the Landing via a short ramp and an elevator rather than a ramp running fully up to the city level. Still, the Landing itself is good looking and abuts the Founders Bridge, which allowed our ride to extend over to the East Hartford side of the park.

I was excited to see that Adriaen's Landing is being extended to wrap around the Science Center and the Convention Center, making for more riding & walking room. Who knows, in a few years, downtown might actually be an interesting place to hang out.

The Haro V4 build is a success, I'd say. It feels solid, well balanced, and stable. I'll know more about its handling characteristics once the wheels are trued and I've taken it out to Penwood or the Reservoir a few times. It's a 26" hardtail XC/trail build, nothing fancy - just something I can start out on until I get a better picture of what I want to do.
